A study of density modulation index in the inner heliospheric solar wind during solar cycle 23

Abstract: An understanding of variations of density modulation index = ΔN/N, the ratio of the electron density fluctuation (ΔN) to the absolute solar wind density ( ), in the inner heliosphere is of vital importance for understanding turbulent dissipation and consequent local heating of solar wind. In addition, the density modulation index plays crucial role in understanding the propagation of energetic electrons, through the heliosphere, produced by solar flares and other explosive solar surface phenomena. We have made… Show more

“…Needless to say, the amplitude of the density turbulence spectrum is key to several important problems such as extended solar wind heating and angular broadening of radio sources. However, most of these studies have rather sparse coverage, and the only comprehensive study of this quantity that we are aware of [Bisoi et al, 2014a] is only for heliocentric distances > 40 R ⊙ . Their formulation used the Kolmogorov scaling ( = 11∕3) and did not consider an inner/dissipation scale.…”

“…While some researchers identify the inner scale with the proton inertial length [Coles and Harmon, 1989;Harmon, 1989;Yamauchi et al, 1998;Verma et al, 1996;Leamon et al, 1999Leamon et al, , 2000Smith et al, 2001;Bruno and Trenchi, 2014], some use the proton gyroradius for the inner scale [Bale et al, 2005;Sahraoui et al, 2013;Bisoi et al, 2014a]. “…At the same time, higher energy particles are free from such significant changes during modulation. The authors attribute this phenomenon to a decrease in the level of IMF turbulence during the last solar cycle [Bisoi et al, 2014;Starodubtsev, Grigoryev, 2011]. The turbulence significantly affects CR propagation in the heliosphere.…”
