A study of mechanical properties of biobased epoxy network: Effect of addition of epoxidized soybean oil and poly(furfuryl alcohol)

Abstract: A novel biobased thermoset interpenetrating network was introduced in this study. Epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) and poly(furfuryl alcohol) (PFA) were added to a commercial biobased epoxy resin. It was hypothesized that addition of ESO and PFA can decrease brittleness of bioepoxy resin and also increase biobased content. Mechanical properties of samples were evaluated using tensile and impact test. It was found that the addition of ESO and PFA increased notched Izod impact energy by 76.6%. This significant incre… Show more

“…They are considered to be one of the cheapest and most abundant biological resources and to have the advantage of inherent biodegradability and reduced toxicity. Vegetable oils are currently being used for the synthesis of both thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers . To achieve this, it is important to functionalize the triglyceride molecule.…”

“…In this respect, poly(furfuryl alcohol) (PFA), a biobased thermoset derived from lignocellulosic feedstock is a good candidate. It is synthesized by condensation polymerization of furfuryl alcohol and has been used in foundry and adhesives …”

“…The fracture morphology of the broken samples after the mechanical test was studied as well (Figure , SEM pictures). The fractured surface of sample DGEBA is smooth [Figure (a), the top picture], which means a brittle breaking . The reactive diluent incorporation clearly causes the surface roughness, so that the roughness for the sample DGEBA‐F20 is much more than that of other samples, either in the tensile or the flexural tests.…”
