A study of root canal morphology of human primary incisors and molars using cone beam computerized tomography: An in vitro study

Abstract: The CBCT showed the presence of bifurcation of root canal at middle third in 13% of mandibular incisors while 20% of mandibular molars had two canals in distal root. The diameter of distobuccal root canal of maxillary molars and mesiolingual canal of mandibular molars was found to be minimum. CBCT is a relatively new and effective technology, which provides an auxiliary imaging modality to supplement conventional radiography for assessing the variation in root canal morphology of primary teeth.

“… 2 Root canal system in primary teeth seems to be more complicated than permanent teeth. 3 , 4 This complexity is mostly attributed to the presence of ramifications 5 and microcanals, 6 in their root canal system. This can make the root canal treatment of primary teeth a more challenging procedure due to the fact that mechanical instrumentation alone cannot eliminate bacteria from these microcanals.…”

“…Primary incisors and canines have been reported to have less complex root canal morphologies compared to primary molars. 19,32 Root canal number of both mandibular and maxillary molars vary between 2-5 8,10,20,32,34 , resulting with greater morphologic variations in their root canal systems, which has been reported to be most frequent especially in mandibular primary molars. 13,20,34 Regarding this, the present study was carried out on mandibular primary first and second molars.…”

“…Further-more, each mesial root in a primary mandibular 2nd molar had 2 canals, which is consistent with the studies conducted by Joseph et al [2], Bagherian et al [5], Aminabadi et al [8] and Gaurav et al . [3]. From this result, clinicians should expect a high probability of locating two canals in mesial roots of primary mandibular molars.…”

“…Because enamel layer is thin in deciduous teeth, the dental pulp is easily involved as dental caries progress. An understanding of root canal morphology is essential in successful endodontic treatment [2,3].…”
