Due to the progressive climate change on our planet, scientists are interested in solving this issue since it threatens not only certain regions or countries but also the world’s ecosystems and economies. Therefore, minimizing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and reducing atmospheric levels are global priorities. Thus, it is necessary at this moment to develop an appropriate approach to reduce or stabilize CO2 levels in the atmosphere. However, CO2 capture projects are long-term, low-profitable, and high-risk environmental projects. Consequently, it is necessary to find an appropriate and sustainable CO2 capture approach that is efficient in reducing atmospheric CO2 levels while having a safe impact on the environment. Although carbon (C) is the key basic component used to produce biological compounds by photosynthetic organisms in terrestrial plants, the C pathway is a key factor affecting the capture of CO2 by photosynthetic organisms. Among photosynthetic organisms, Paulownia, a multipurpose tree, is popular around the world for its timber and its potential role in CO2 sequestration. Paulownia spp. belongs to the Paulowniaceae family and comprises a group of trees. These trees are primarily found in southeastern Asia, particularly in China, and have been intentionally grown for more than two millennia due to their ornamental, cultural, and medicinal value. The number of Paulownia species varies depending on taxonomic classification, ranging from 6 to 17. Among them, Paulownia tomentosa, Paulownia elongata, Paulownia fortunei, and Paulownia catalpifolia are the most widely recognized and favored species. The present review provides a comprehensive technical-economic scenario for the capture of one million tons of CO2 by Paulownia trees (as a terrestrial plant model, grown on 2,400 ha−1). P. tomentosa can be utilized in agroforestry systems to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions within urban cities and emphasize the carbon storage potential of agroforestry. In conclusion, Paulownia trees as an environmental mass project showed great encouragement to investors and governments to expand these types of projects to achieve global climate goals by 2050.

The research on Paulownia cultivation and wood properties is up to date in many countries. However, there are no data on the properties of this wood defined on a microscale, on microtome samples. The main aim of this study was to find the best valorization path for the wood of Paulownia Shang Tong Hybrid F1 from an extensively cultivated plantation established in April 2017 in Poland by determining the tensile strength, the wood density, the strength-to-density ratio, and the modulus of elasticity on a cross-section of the trunk. The wood was collected from extensive plantation, where production is based on the natural resources of the habitat and ambient weather conditions, which is the opposite to the intensive cultivation model, which is the recommended model of Paulownia cultivation. The results of this study show that the mean density of the analyzed samples was approximately 210 kg/m3 when the mean value of the modulus of elasticity (MOE) was approximately 2400 MPa. The mean result for the tensile strength ratio to density was 11.25 km. In the case of anatomical structure, the increasing trend with age was noticed both in fiber and vessel characteristics. The study results provide unique data worldwide about Paulownia wood’s properties based on a cross-section of the trunk, from plantations cultivated in conditions which are not recommended by seedlings producers. The obtained data indicate that the Paulownia wood (examined) from the cultivation in this study has a technical quality similar to that of model-intensive agricultural plantations.

Some properties of wood, such as maximum moisture content, cell-wall density and porosity, are not well known, even though they affect the performance of chemical preservatives, glues and coatings on wood. This knowledge gap was addressed in the present study by analysing these physical properties in laurel (Laurus nobilis L.) wood. Laurel is a common hardwood tree in southern Europe. Seventeen laurel trees were felled for the study, and 300 defect-free specimens were obtained from the trees for analysis. The following mean values were obtained: wood maximum moisture content, 114%; cell-wall oven-dry density, 1198 kg m−3; and oven-dry wood porosity, 45%. Significant inter- and intra-tree variations in the three properties were observed. The inter-tree variation was mainly attributed to the tree age, and the trend suggests that wood maximum moisture content and porosity are expected to be lower in older trees than those under study. The values of the three properties were slightly, but statistically significantly, lower at the highest positions in the tree. Harvesting of the basal logs of young trees is therefore advisable only if more porous wood is required, and commercial exploitation of the whole trunk of mature trees is recommended if more compact wood is required. The variation in cell-wall density was not negligible, although this variable is often assumed to be approximately constant for all wood species. Maximum moisture content and wood porosity can be estimated using bulk or apparent density as a predictor variable.
