A study of SIP trunk security and challenges

Abstract: Abstract-Several voice over internet protocol (VoIP) providers migrate to their services to session initiation protocol (SIP). SIP is a lightweight signaling protocol used to implement in wiled VoIP services. However, with the global spread of this service, we can see how VoIP is affected by the stealing of SIP trunk services. Thus, the VoIP Trade Company will exhaust it effort and income. Our survey shows how much SIP security is enforced when somebody cracks the SIP server, and looks for any VoIP process tru… Show more

“…The embedded Asterisk server to the PoT gateway can provide VoIP communication and the LTC capability to home and small business domains or as a seamless integral part of the existing UC solution within a large enterprise to enrich it with the LTC capability. In the latter case, the PoT gateway is interfaced to the existing UC through the use of phone technologies, namely, SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) trunking [28]. SIP trunking is a virtual connection that leverages the existing TCP/IP network infrastructure, ultimately the Internet, to provide for voice and video communications in UC solutions.…”

“…It showed the configuration of Asterisk to implement normal calls, voice mail, and conferences on a local network with soft phones. Security aspects and the challenges faced by SIP trunks are dealt in [3]. Adding PBX and SIP trunking service on top of exiting network does not provide the SIP packets to pass through.…”

“…If the SoHo network is viewed from the point of view of the services operated on it, the guarantee of the correct functioning and the quality of service by the provider of the WAN connection ends in the SoHo router which is depicted in Figure 6. It is assumed here that the provider of the WAN connection terminates the VoIP traffic on a SIP registrar [21] integrated in the SoHo router. All local end devices contact this SIP registrar, which in turn forwards the VoIP traffic to the telephone server of the WAN provider for termination using a SIP trunk.…”
