Phone of Things (PoT) extends the connectivity options for IoT systems by leveraging the ubiquitous phone network infrastructure, making it part of the IoT architecture. PoT enriches the connectivity options of IoT while promoting its affordability, accessibility, security, and scalability. PoT enables incentive IoT applications that can result in more innovative homes, office environments, and telephony solutions. This paper presents the Location Transparency Call (LTC) system, an intelligent phone dialing system for businesses based on the PoT architecture. The LTC system intelligently mitigates the impact of missed calls on companies and provides high availability and dynamic reachability to employees within the premises. LTC automatically forwards calls to the intended employees to the closest phone extensions at their current locations. Location transparency is achieved by actively maintaining and dynamically updating a real-time database that maps the persons’ locations using the RFID tags they carry. We demonstrate the system’s feasibility and usability and evaluate its performance through a fully-fledged prototype representing its hardware and software components that can be applied in real situations at large scale.

Scalability is an important aspect of communication networks. With the ascent of SIP and associated modern real-time protocols, IP telephony has become a revolutionary technology in connecting users through real-time voice communications with enabled video and instant messaging capabilities. B2BUA is a SIP server that provides call management and authentication functionality by reformulating the request and routing the traffic to other user agents in the network. It comprises signaling and media entities that handle all control signaling messages and real-time data(media) information respectively. The signaling and entities run as different processes in the same container. Such an architecture encounters a large CPU utilization after a specific number of maximum calls due to increase traffic flowing within the same node. Further Packet processing is CPU intensive and there is a need for an architecture that scales well with increasing traffic without hitting the CPU performance. The paper presents the design of decoupled architecture for Signaling and Media entities by running both the processes in different containers. With such an approach, one Signaling entity can communicate with multiple Media entities or vice versa thereby providing a suitable scalable solution to deal with the increased traffic and further maintaining the system efficiency. The paper is concluded by highlighting the difference between Kubernetes and OpenStack for the proposed architecture

Optical fiber networks are currently the standard for delivering high bandwidth to customers. Various access technologies to business networks with a very high bandwidth up to access networks for buildings and individual consumers have emerged. In the area of business networks, bandwidths of 10 Gb/s have become established, while in the area of customer bandwidths of 100 Mb/s to 1 Gb/s are used. This chapter will focus on the optical network connections inside buildings. The use of optical glass fibers or/and polymeric optical fibers in different network topologies in connection to high-speed actual WIFI- technologies will be discussed.
