Power system transient stability can be effectively improved by applying shunt braking resistors. This paper proposes multi-objective heuristics-based optimization for shunt braking resistor sizing. The proposed approach addresses three objectives: transient angle stability, transient voltage response, and mechanical stress of the turbine-generator shaft. The optimization problem was solved using a Python implementation of the multi-objective evolutionary NSGA-II algorithm. Based on the optimization model, comprehensive tests for multimachine IEEE 39-bus power system including single-and multi-objective simulations were performed. Pareto sets for various sets of objectives are obtained and discussed. The results show the complexity of the shunt braking resistor optimization process. Optimization studies were complemented by simulation tests performed for assessing of the impact of optimal shunt braking resistor on power system dynamic response. Detailed discussion of test results has confirmed the correctness of the proposed approach.

Steam valve control is usually discarded in power system stability due to belief in its slow response. The present manuscript makes use of it as a backup control in the case of failure of the main fast excitation control. The model describing system dynamics as a function of the two controllers, with wide range loading conditions, is derived in a norm-bounded format. Linear matrix inequalities are derived as a sufficient condition to obtain reliable controllers that provide good oscillation damping when both controllers are sound or even in the case of failure of either one. The design scheme is robust in the sense that it keeps reliable stability against wide load changes as well. A single machine infinite bus system is presented to illustrate the proposed design procedure and exhibit its performance. Results of excitation and governor controller testing show that the desired performance could be fulfilled from light load to heavy load conditions. System performance shows a remarkable improvement of dynamic stability by obtaining a well-damped oscillation time response even in the case of failure of either controller. Extension of the proposed controller to multiarea load-frequency control with time delay is also presented.

This paper presents a practical yet accurate equivalencing method of power system for an online transient stability assessment. The proposed vector composition method effectively aggregates the multiple generators and transmission lines of the power system, and develops a grid-adaptive equivalent for which well-established analysis technique can be applied to assess the power system stability. It thus allows for activating preventive or corrective measures on time to stabilize the system in emergency. The parameters of the equivalent can be refined using the synchronized measurement data, and the transient stability margin can be updated. The efficacy and accuracy are validated for a multi-machine infinite bus system, and the utility planning model of Korea electric power system where an equal area criterion and the generator tripping are employed for assessing the stability and stabilizing action as specified in the special protection schemes for the Korea electric power system.
