A Study of Trace Element Contents in Plants Growing at Honaz Dagi-Denizli, Turkey

Abstract: Denizli is one of the rapidly developing states in the West Anatolian Region of Turkey. Keeping this in view, 30 different plants were selected to study their potential as biomonitors of trace elements like Pb, Cd, Ni, Zn, Fe and Mn (μg g-1 , dry weight). The samples were collected from two different altitudes of Honaz Dagi, a mauntain overlooking at state of Denizli. The concentrations of trace elements were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The mean concentrations determined at 1000 … Show more

“…Besides their nutritional values, mushrooms possess medicinal proprieties in prevention of some diseases, such as hypertension and cancer (Manzi et al 2001). Although there were several studies carried out in several countries on metals concentrations in the fruiting bodies of edible wild grown and cultivated mushrooms (Tuzen et al 2007;Sesli et al 2008;Baslar et al 2009;Radulescu et al 2010;Sarikurkcu et al 2011;Zhu et al 2011;Sen et al 2012;Okwulehie and Ogoke 2013;Obodai et al 2014;Dulay et al 2015), however, such studies are still very scarce in Ethiopia. Therefore, initiation of such study for better understanding of the types of mushrooms cultivated and consumed in the country in relation to the essential and non-essential metals is very much demanding and timely.…”

“…(Celik et al 2005;Baslar et al 2009;Yasar et al 2010). Some toxic elements (Al, As, Ba, Be, Cd, Pb, Hg, Os, Th, Va) affect soil pH and uptake of the nutrients from the soil, which influence growth and development on terrestrial flora (Vitorello et al 2005).…”

“…Hence, the area studied is free from the contamination of trace element pollution concerning the trace elements investigated. Baslar et al (2009) Some plant species (such as A. fulvescens, Cupressus sempervirens, Cupressus arizonica, Pinus halepensis) are more convenient for biomonitoring of atmospheric deposition of pollutants (Baycu et al 2006;Kaya and Yaman 2008). The ability of these plants to absorb and accumulate xenobiotics makes them useful as indicators of environmental pollution (Buszewski et al 2000).…”
