Aim To test a hypothetical path model evaluating the influence of menopause symptoms on sexual function among middle‐aged perimenopausal women, as well as identify the mediating roles of body image, depression and sexual communication in this relationship. Methods We used a cross‐sectional, correlational design. We included one exogenous variable (menopause symptoms) and four endogenous variables (body image, depression, sexual communication and sexual function) in the proposed model. All data were collected between January 19 and March 11, 2016, and analyzed using spss statistics 25.0 and AMOS 23.0. Results Eight of the nine hypothesized paths in the model were significant. Specifically, menopause symptoms were significantly associated with sexual function via the effects of body image, depression and sexual communication. Conclusion This study may provide basic data for counseling and nursing programs to help improve sexual function in middle‐aged perimenopausal women. Particularly, these programs should focus on the indirect paths via body image, depression and sexual communication, such as by improving body image and sexual communication and reducing depression.

Background: A crucial but often overlooked impact of early life exposure to trauma is its far-reaching effect on a person’s relationship with their body. Several domains of body experience may be negatively influenced or damaged as a result of early childhood trauma. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate disturbances in three domains of body experience: body attitude, body satisfaction, and body awareness. Furthermore, associations between domains of body experience and severity of trauma symptoms as well as frequency of dissociation were evaluated. Method: Body attitude was measured with the Dresden Body Image Questionnaire, body satisfaction with the Body Cathexis Scale, and body awareness with the Somatic Awareness Questionnaire in 50 female patients with complex trauma and compared with scores in a non-clinical female sample (n = 216). Patients in the clinical sample also filled out the Davidson Trauma Scale and the Dissociation Experience Scale. Results: In all measured domains, body experience was severely affected in patients with early childhood trauma. Compared with scores in the non-clinical group, effect sizes in Cohen’s d were 2.7 for body attitude, 1.7 for body satisfaction, and 0.8 for body awareness. Associations between domains of body experience and severity of trauma symptoms were low, as were the associations with frequency of dissociative symptoms. Conclusions: Early childhood trauma in women is associated with impairments in self-reported body experience that warrant careful assessment in the treatment of women with psychiatric disorders.

RESUMOEste estudo teve como objetivo analisar a qualidade de vida de acadêmicos ingressantes em cursos de Educação Física e compará-la entre os sexos, cursos, status do peso, imagem corporal e níveis de atividade física dos participantes. Participaram 198 acadêmicos (Bacharelado= 104 e Licenciatura= 94), com média de idade de 20,6 (4,6) anos. Os participantes responderam a um questionário sobre sexo, idade, massa corporal e estatura (para cálculo do IMC e classificação do status do peso), imagem corporal (escala de silhuetas), nível de atividade física (IPAQ curto) e qualidade de vida (WHOQOL-Bref). A média da qualidade de vida geral foi de 74,9 pontos. Verificou-se melhor qualidade de vida nos domínios físico e social e pior no ambiental. Observaram-se diferenças na qualidade de vida geral e nos domínios físico, psicológico e social entre as categorias da imagem corporal. Houve diferença também na qualidade de vida geral e nos domínios físico e ambiental entre os níveis de atividade física. Conclui-se que os acadêmicos apresentaram boa qualidade de vida. Comparados aos seus pares, os insatisfeitos com sua imagem corporal tinham qualidade de vida inferior e os ativos fisicamente, superior. ABSTRACTThis study aimed to analyze the quality of life in freshmen college students of Physical Education courses and compare it between sex, courses, weight status, body image and physical activity level of the participants. Participants answered a questionnaire about their sex, age, body mass and height (for BMI calculation and weight status classification), body image (figure rating scale), physical activity level (IPAQ short form) and quality of life (WHOQOL-Bref). Mean score of quality of life was 74.9 points. Better quality of life was founded in physical and social domains and worst quality of life in environmental domain. Differences were observed in general quality of life, and physical, psychological and social domains between body image categories. There was also difference in general quality of life and physical and environmental domains between physical activity levels. Concluding, college students had good quality of life. Compared to peers, the ones dissatisfied with their body image had lower quality of life and the physically actives, higher.
