A study on carbon fiber reinforced poly(lactic acid)/polycarbonate composites

Abstract: In this study, the properties of carbon fiber (CF) reinforced poly(lactic acid)/polycarbonate (PLA/PC) composites was investigated. Two compositions of PLA/PC (90/10 and 50/50) blends were used as matrix. Characterization of composites was carried out by differential scanning calorimetry, thermal gravimetric analysis, tensile test, dynamic mechanical analysis, limiting oxygen index (LOI), scanning electron microscope, and heat release rate (HRR). The tensile strength values of 90PLA/10PC and 50PLA/50PC blends … Show more

“…Since PLA is biodegradable, natural fiber reinforced PLA composites have been studied more. However, it has been reported that the strength of the natural fiber‐reinforced PLA composites is not much increased compared to those with synthetic fiber reinforcement since one of the factors affecting the strength of the composite produced is the fiber type …”

“…One of them was made by our group, carbon fiber reinforcement was applied to PLA/PC blends and the mechanical, thermal, morphological, and flammability properties of the composites were investigated. Different ratios of PLA/PC blends were produced and % 5‐10‐15‐30 carbon fiber was added to the PLA/PC matrix in this study . Huda et al examined the chopped glass fiber (GF)‐ and recycled newspaper cellulose fiber‐strengthened PLA composites, GF reinforcement polypropylene (PP), and neat PLA.…”

“…To solve the problems of single performance and the application limitations of traditional friction materials, different types of materials have been combined into fabricate composite materials with enhanced performance. For instance, metal‐based friction composites, ceramic‐enhanced friction composites, and fiber‐enhanced friction composites have been developed. Among the fiber composites, carbon fiber friction composites possess the advantages of high dimensional stability, high strength, good wear resistance, high heat resistance, and good thermal conductivity .…”
