A Study on Cell-Mediated Immunity in Polymorphic Light Eruption

Abstract: Polymorphic light eruption (PLE) can be defined as a delayed abnormal response to sunlight. In this paper some features of the presumable immune response were studied in 55 patients with PLE and the results were compared with the findings available in 58 cases with porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT). The mean intracutaneous reactivity index measured by skin tests of delayed type was normal in both diseases. The number of the active and total E-rosette-forming peripheral lymphocytes was significantly lower in the ac… Show more

“…In Scottish studies, 20% of the cases occurred before 10 years of age (20) and 47% before 20 years of age (14), whereas in Finland (2) about 25% of the cases developed earlier than 15 years of age. In our material (398 PLE patients between 1967 and 2006), 4% of the cases manifested before 5 years of age and 10% between 6 and 14 years before adolescence (21).…”

“…Some investigators have also examined the possibility that PLE involves quantitative or qualitative lymphocyte disturbances that could indicate defective immunoregulatory mechanism in affected individuals. Transient decreases as well as increases in numbers of lymphocytes have been reported 52,53 . In one study, the number of T cells as well as their response to stimulation with phytohaemagglutinin, concavalin A, and a purified protein derivative of tuberculin were found to be normal in subjects with PLE before and after photochemotherapy 54 .…”
