A Study on Electrical and Thermal Properties of Polyimide/MWNT Nanocomposites

Abstract: In this work, the electrical and thermal properties of polyimide/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) nanocomposites were investigated. The polyimide/MWNT nanocomposites contained from 0 to 2.0 wt % of MWNT. The electrical properties of the polyimide films were characterized by a specific resistance measurement. The thermal properties were evaluated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). It was found that the thermal properties of the polyimide nanocomposites incre… Show more

“…Because r-MWNTs was physically mixed in PS matrixes, its dispersion and interaction with PS matrix were nonuniform. In the case of its loose packing with PS matrix, the consequent increasing of the free volume of polymer chains [26] resulted in the decreased T g of 77.4 C. In the other case of tight packing with PS matrix, r-MWNTs obstructed the motion of PS resulting in the increased T g of 96.5 C.…”

“…It is believed that the first peak at 420 °C might be attributed to the early volatilization of PI, where another peak is at 650 °C may be due to the mass degradation of PI at a higher temperature than the other polymers. 25 In Figure 3c, three distinct degradation regions can be observed. Two major peaks at ∼300 and ∼400 °C can be attributed to the degradation of PVC as mentioned earlier, 23 and the rapid reduction in mass percentage at 460 °C can be attributed to the combined degradation effect of the polymers PVC and PBT.…”
