Japan is becoming a ‘super‐aging society’ beyond an ‘aged society’. During last decade, considerable political measures on the housing for the elderly have been launched, but the turning point is coming. There are many private detached houses in Japan. In order to upgrade the quality of ordinary houses, ‘guidelines of housing design devised to cope with aged society’ was announced by the ministry. From April 2000, under the Long‐term Care Insurance Law, house adaptation system for the frail elderly was institutionalized and the needs of it have been increasing wider and wider. Most elderly people feel anxious for the future when they need personal care that includes home help services and nursing care. Elderly residents of collective housings want to reserve the service facility in the same building. New types of dwellings have also been developed (such as senior housing, care house, group home) Recently, the old peoples homes began to consider a high value to the comfortable atmosphere as a house. Even the nursing homes are changing into houses that contain small scale homes. Group living is not an institution, but a house that must have a possibility to suit the all categories of elderly people. The scheme will become one of the mainstreams of housing for the elderly as a new type of dwelling.

In aging and aged countries, one of the main issues is to establish sufficient nursing homes for seniors. Japan, as one of the most rapidly aged countries, has been reforming nursing homes for the elderly since the 1990s and established a long‐term care insurance system. The purpose of this scoping review is to systematically map the evolution of researches for nursing homes in Japan since the 1990s, particularly with the post‐occupancy evaluation of the introduction of private rooms and small units. Forty‐three articles concerning privatization of rooms, shared spaces, and small unitization in nursing homes were extracted and analyzed. They were published between 1994 and 2021 in Journal of Architecture and Planning, AIJ Journal of Technology, JAABE, and JAR. The results revealed an evaluation of the privatized rooms mainly from the perspectives of residents' lives and care staffing, the effects and issues of the shared spaces introduced at the same time as private rooms, and the evaluation and issues on subsequent unit‐type floor plans. This study offers significant implications to Asian countries that will have aging and aged populations in the near future by summarizing Japan's experience in dealing with realistic and practical problems over the past 20 years.

Over the past 30 years, environment and behavior research in Japan has paralleled the international growth of the field. Unfortunately, despite noteworthy periodic efforts to cross-culturally bridge language barriers between English- and Japanese-speaking researchers, public policy makers, planning and design practitioners, and students specializing in this subject area, significant communication obstacles persist. In response, a literature review is presented of recent research in Japan on the subject of environment and aging. The review spans a 17-year period (1985-2002). The objective is to enhance international communication, stimulate collaborative work, and foster appreciation of the broad parameters of the dramatic trends in aging occurring globally.
