A Survey and Taxonomy on Medium Access Control Strategies for Cooperative Communication in Wireless Networks: Research Issues and Challenges

Abstract: Cooperative communication (CC) has been introduced as an effective technique to combat the detrimental effects of channel fading by exploiting spatial diversity gain, resulting in improved throughput and network performance. CC provides an opportunity for single antenna nodes to share their resources and construct a virtual antenna array at a lower cost. As a result, CC is considered an efficient solution for mobile nodes where some difficulties in terms of physical size and energy consumption arise from impla… Show more

“…Depending on how the relay node processes received signals, various signaling methods are proposed in literature, including Amplify and Forward (AF), Decode and Forward (DF) and Compress and Forward (CF). For more detail please refer to [15]. Since the SNR of signals at a receiver can be largely enhanced when helper's cooperative transmission exists, CC is often utilized for energy saving by reducing nodes' transmission power in ad-hoc networks in previous work.…”

“…While this is first survey paper of its kind that primarily focuses on the cooperativeness in vehicular networks, there do exist a number of survey papers that cover cooperative networking [10], [26]–[28] or vehicular communication [29]–[40] in general. Figure 1 shows the related surveys classification and highlights the research gaps with respect to this survey.…”

“…Spatial diversity is also exploited through cooperative communication, which proposes virtual antenna arrays built with single-antenna devices. The impact of such techniques on the MAC in general is surveyed in [64].…”
