“…Such finding is in agreement with previous studies from South Africa (Bhoora et al, 2009), Greece (Kouam et al, 2010), Mongolia (Sloboda et al, 2011) and Jordan (Qablan et al, 2013).…”

“…Few studies, based on molecular detection, found the age a significant factor influencing the prevalence of equine piroplasmids (Kouam et al, 2010;Sloboda et al, 2011;Qablan et al, 2013). The same effect of age is apparent also among our dataset, as T. equi infection was more prevalent among equids aged 4 years and older.…”

“…Typically, canine piroplasmosis is caused by B. canis and B. gibsoni. In our study, we used universal primers targeting the 18S rRNA gene for detection of piroplasmids (Sloboda et al 2011) and confirmed the presence of piroplasms in the blood of three examined dogs. Interestingly, sequencing of the amplicons did not reveal the above-mentioned known canine hostspecific species; indisputably, the obtained sequences are most similar to those of equine piroplasmids B. caballi and T. equi.…”

“…The 25-μl PCR reaction consisted of 2 μl of template DNA (25 ng), 12.5 μl of Combi PPP Master Mix (Top-Bio s.r.o., Prague, Czech Republic), 10 μM of each of the primers and 8.5 μl of PCR water. Amplification was carried out under conditions given by Inokuma et al (2002), Walls et al (2000, and Sloboda et al (2011), for A. phagocytophilum, H. canis, and piroplasmids, respectively.…”
