A survey on area coverage in wireless sensor networks

Abstract: In recent years, Wireless S ensor Networks (WS Ns) have gained much attention because of its varying applications from catastrophic region to industrial and household region. In few applications, sensors are deployed in extreme environmental conditions. Hence, node access is not possible in that scenario. Therefore, a large number of sensor nodes are deployed in the target field so that node replacement problem is eliminated. Also, coverage is a very important parameter because it measures how effectively a ta… Show more

“…When sensors are placed for monitoring a large area for environmental changes, aftermath of natural disasters or military operations, it is not possible to place them deterministically due to the large number of nodes to be placed or the accessibility issues in these areas [14]. Generally during large scale sensor deployment in a geographically distributed manner, sensors are placed randomly by dropping them off from an airplane or some other method [15].…”

“…Since those nodes are battery operated, energy is a critical issue in those networks. WSNs are used on various applications, such as in air pollution detection and area monitoring for military field (Singh and Sharma, 2014). In those applications, the replacement of dead nodes with new ones to offer energy is very difficult.…”
