“…To overcome this problem, we consider it necessary to increase the number of studies determining the concentration of pollutants in both free-living and parasitic organisms, since it has been demonstrated that in many cases parasites accumulate higher concentrations of pollutants (especially heavy metals) in comparison with their hosts (e.g. Sures, 1999; Malek et al ., 2007; Khaleghzadeh-Ahandar et al ., 2011; Nachev et al ., 2013; Golestaninasab et al ., 2014; Tellez & Merchant, 2015). As a recent example we have cestodes of rays, which are very effective at accumulating Pb and Cd in comparison with their hosts, but are not as effective as barnacles in the Gulf of Oman (Middle East) (Golestaninasab et al ., 2014).…”
