A Survey on LoRaWAN Architecture, Protocol and Technologies

Abstract: Internet of Things (IoT) expansion led the market to find alternative communication technologies since existing protocols are insufficient in terms of coverage, energy consumption to fit IoT needs. Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) emerged as an alternative cost-effective communication technology for the IoT market. LoRaWAN is an open LPWAN standard developed by LoRa Alliance and has key features i.e., low energy consumption, long-range communication, builtin security, GPS-free positioning. “…The enterprises using the Internet of things (IoT) cannot rely solely on wireless networks such as WiFi, ZigBee, and low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) for their future critical related systems [25]. They demand more and more functionality now unavailable according to Rao and Prasad [26], particularly including very low latency, very high reliability, and very high bandwidth and bit rate.…”

“…A plethora of LP-WAN technologies are out in the market these days that include: Sigfox, Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN), NarrowBand Internet of Things (NB-IoT), DASH7, LTE-M1, Ingenu, and Weightless to name a few [6]. Among them, LoRaWAN [7], [8], Sigfox and, Weightless have already been proposed suitable for most of the Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication scenarios in IIoT use-cases because of their common characteristics (such as, low power consumption, high scalability with extended radio coverage, and simple/low-cost network infrastructure) [9].…”

“…Beside WSNs, additional relevant IoT technologies for Smart Agriculture scenarios are Low-Power Wide-Area Networks (LPWANs), being designed to offer low-cost and low-rate connectivity to a large number of constrained devices (e.g., in terms of power source and processing capabilities) geographically distributed over large areas (e.g., a farm with its surrounding fields). Two of the most recent communication technologies in the field of LPWANs are LoRa [18] and LoRaWAN [19], which are appealing choices for Smart Farming applications. In particular, the applicability of LoRaWAN is the main reason behind which LoRaFarM low-level communications are built around LoRaWAN.…”
