A survey on mobility management protocols in Wireless Sensor Networks based on 6LoWPAN technology

Abstract: International audienceMobility has the advantage of enlarging WSN applications. However, proposing a mobility support protocol in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) represents a significant challenge. In this paper, we propose a survey on the mobility management protocols in Wireless Sensor Networks based on 6LoWPAN technology. This technology enables to connect IP sensor devices to other IP networks without any need for gateways. We highlight the advantages and drawbacks with performances issues of each studied … Show more

“…In addition, it also implements several header compression techniques to handle resource-limited devices. Moreover, the IPv6 allows having a much larger address space and also the capability of establishing a direct external communication link between the devices without the need for a coordinator or a gateway to translate the messages [34].…”

“…Different types of tutorials and surveys on low-power wireless already exist. Some of them are focused on use cases, for example illustrating different mobility management protocols using 6LoWPAN technology [23], discussing the application of WSN in Urban Areas [24] and multiple streaming in WSN [25]. Others are focused on protocol stack design, for example, analyzing the performance of multiple resource allocation algorithms at different protocol layers [26] and multichannel routing algorithms [27].…”

“…The buffered packets should be tunneled to the MN through the new point of attachment. This tunneling process leads to increase in the power expenditure and signaling cost due to using a lot of control information by the MN [86]. These protocols also do not consider the duty cycle when the MN state in the hibernation mode to leverage the power.…”
