Experimentally, an alternative technique to one of the classical optical heterodyning methods for generating microwave (MW) signals is demonstrated. The novelty of this approach lies in the utilization of a Multimode Laser Diode (MLD) in conjunction with a Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) and a tunable Distributed Feedback (DFB) laser, rather than employing two DFB lasers. The FBG acts as an optical filter, enabling the selection of only one mode of the MLD. This selected mode serves as a reference in the optical beating process alongside the signal from the tunable DFB laser. Tuning is achieved by varying the wavelength of the DFB laser to modify the wavelength separation (Δλ) between the two optical modes. Experimental results are corroborated theoretically and through simulation. Performance evaluation of the system is conducted by measuring the signal-tonoise ratio (SNR) and the Phase Noise (PN) parameters.

A Review–Unguided Optical Communications: Developments, Technology Evolution, and Challenges

This review paper discusses the complete evolution of free-space optical (FSO) communication, also known as unguided optical communication (UOC) technologies, all the way back to ancient man’s fire to today’s machine-learning-supported UOC systems. The principles, significance, and developments that have happened over the past several decades, as well as installation methodologies, technological limitations, and today’s challenges of UOCs are presented. All the subsets of UOC: FSO communication, underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC), and visible light communication (VLC), with their technology/system developments, potential applications, and limitations are reviewed. The state-of-the-art developments/achievements in (i) FSO channel effects and their mitigation techniques; (ii) radio-over-FSO techniques; (iii) wavelength division multiplexing and sub-carrier multiplexing techniques; (iv) FSO for worldwide interoperability for microwave access applications; (v) space optical satellite communication (SOSC); (vi) UWOC; (vii) photoacoustic communication (PAC); (viii) light-fidelity; (ix) VLC; (x) vehicular VLC (V2LC); and (xi) optical camera communication are reviewed. In addition, the current developments on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (to improve the performance of UOC systems), energy harvesting (for the effective utilization of UOC channels), and near-future communication network scenarios (mandatory for secured broadband digital links) are covered. Finally, in brief, to achieve the full potential of UOC systems, challenges that require immediate research attention are summarized.

Photonic radar, a cornerstone in the innovative applications of microwave photonics, emerges as a pivotal technology for future Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Offering enhanced accuracy and reliability, it stands at the forefront of target detection and recognition across varying weather conditions. Recent advancements have concentrated on augmenting radar performance through high-speed, wide-band signal processing–a direct benefit of modern photonics’ attributes such as EMI immunity, minimal transmission loss, and wide bandwidth. Our work introduces a cutting-edge photonic radar system that employs Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) signals, synergized with Mode Division and Wavelength Division Multiplexing (MDM-WDM). This fusion not only enhances target detection and recognition capabilities across diverse weather scenarios, including various intensities of fog and solar scintillations, but also demonstrates substantial resilience against solar noise. Furthermore, we have integrated machine learning techniques, including Decision Tree, Extremely Randomized Trees (ERT), and Random Forest classifiers, to substantially enhance target recognition accuracy. The results are telling: an accuracy of 91.51%, high sensitivity (91.47%), specificity (97.17%), and an F1 Score of 91.46%. These metrics underscore the efficacy of our approach in refining ITS radar systems, illustrating how advancements in microwave photonics can revolutionize traditional methodologies and systems.
