A survey on reuse in the business process management domain

Abstract: Business process management (BPM) is an important technological support to improve organisation competitiveness. BPM can benefit from reuse approaches and techniques at several stages of the business process life cycle in order to increase dynamism, flexibility and competitiveness. Existing reuse techniques from areas such as software engineering can be extended to this emerging domain. This paper presents the results of a literature review of reuse in the BPM domain. It aims to provide an overview and an over… Show more

“…We have searched systematic mapping studies and literature reviews in the field to analyse the results obtained and make comparisons with our findings. As far as we are aware, As far as we are aware, [30] is the only survey in the field of business process variability, with a mainly technical view on the subject, exploring process reuse techniques and their limitations. Our work provides a wider view of the field, not only addressing approaches for process variability management but also providing a theoretical synthesis of this phenomenon and shedding light on research opportunities.…”

“…For example, confidentiality and integrity are two supplementing security requirements that aim to prevent unauthorized access and modification for system resources. Moreover, since business projects within the same domain can share many procedural business practices [23], some data protection patterns can be defined in a domain-specific way to allow their reuse in future business projects within the same domain. Thereby, requirements engineers do not need to create patterns for all the elicited requirements every time a new business project starts.…”

“…A common practice is to reuse procedural processes from already existing business process models when designing a business process model for a new business project within the same domain. The main reason is the shared business needs between stakeholders of different projects or applications within the same domain [23]. For example, in Fig.…”

“…As stated in the survey of Fantinato et al (2012), major challenges in the field of business process variability modelling are related to the reaction time of process changes and of the creation and selection of the right business process variants, which are also main topics in our framework since the time to adopt the IT infrastructure to the changed business processes can be reduced with the new framework. Derguech (2010) presents a framework for the systematic reuse of process models.…”
