A survey on the occurrence of ochratoxin A in feeds for swine and laying hens

Abstract: Results of a 2-year (2009-2010) survey on the occurrence of ochratoxin A (OTA) in swine feed and in feed for laying hens in Portugal are reported. A total of 664 samples (478 swine feed, 186 feed for laying hens) were analyzed by a HPLC method using fluorescence detection with 2 μg kg(-1) as detection limit. In swine feed, 31 samples (6.49%) were positive for OTA. In feed for laying hens, 12 samples (6.45%) were OTA-positive. The average levels of contamination were low, with median values of positive samples … Show more

“…For example, OTA concentrations found in animal feed ranged from 0.013 to 0.027 μM (Reyes-Velázquez et al 2008;Martins et al 2012), which were determined to be much lower than the concentration, 12.88 μM, used in the present study. OTA concentrations lower than 3.22 μM did not affect the BoMac proliferation, and IC25s were chosen to provide the similar stress levels across different PMs in this study.…”

“…Among ochratoxins, ochratoxin A (OTA) presents the highest toxicity. OTA is primarily nephrotoxic mycotoxin, which frequently co‐occurs in various foodstuffs, such as corn silage, barley, oats, rye, and wheat . Besides nephrotoxicity, OTA shows potent hepatotoxin, immunotoxin, and genotoxin in animals and humans .…”
