A survey study on major technical barriers affecting the decision to adopt cloud services

Abstract: In the context of cloud computing, risks associated with underlying technologies, risks involving service models and outsourcing, and enterprise readiness have been recognized as potential barriers for the adoption. To accelerate cloud adoption, the concrete barriers negatively influencing the adoption decision need to be identified. Our study aims at understanding the impact of technical and security-related barriers on the organizational decision to adopt the cloud. We analyzed data collected through a web s… Show more

“…Notwithstanding, the literature also reveals that obstacles and difficulties exist in organizations' adoption of cloud computing, such as reticence regarding information security and protection against nonauthorized access [14,15], the absence of knowledge on the privacy capabilities of service providers [16], a lack of understanding between the organization and the cloud provider as to service scope and 2 Mobile Information Systems implementation [17], technical barriers [18], and financing problems that companies in certain sectors might have to address the required investment in technology and qualified IT personnel, especially in the case of small and medium enterprises [11,19].…”

“…Although cloud computing promises great benefits, it has not yet reached the maturity level that allows computing resources to be treated like commodities such as electricity as predicted by Buyya et al [4]. Organisations are still reluctant to migrate their IT systems and services to the cloud due to concerns of losing control and other undesired outcomes [5]. Further, organisations are typically interested in moving only some of their systems to the cloud due to the difficulty of migrating the related applications, for example, safety-critical software [6].…”

“…Although evaluation of providers and their appropriate selection are critical, making an informed decision to migrate requires the analysis of a wide range of factors at early stages of the decision process. While the existing literature provides a fundamental understanding of cloud computing architecture, benefits and some issues, models and frameworks to support the migration and managing cloud services, research on drivers and barriers of the broad organizational adoption is still in early stages [5] and [9]. Therefore, this paper explores the issues that have increased the difficulties in organisations' decisions to migrate to the cloud.…”
