Cyperus esculentus L. is known as chufa, yellow nutsedge or tiger nut. lt grows wild as a weed, but also is grown as a crop; sometimes it is also called rush-nut. Although it can be found in cold regions, as Alaska (Holm et al. 1977: 125), it is considered a plant of warm areas, widespread in tropical and temperate zones around the globe (de Vries 1991). It is most troublesome in eastem and southem Africa and in North and Central America. Recently it has also spread to sorne European countries with colder climates such as the Netherlands (Rotteveel 1993;de Vries 1991), Switzerland (Gerhold 1992Schmitt 1995; Schmitt and Sahli 1992), Germany and Austria (Gerhold 1992) and Hungary (Dancza 1994). Kükenthal (1936) distinguished eight botanical varieties of Cyperus esculentus. Recently three of these varieties were rejected and only four wild varieties (esculentus, leptostachyus, macrostachyus, and hermanii) and the cultivated variety sativus are recognized today (ter Borg and Schippers 1992). RESUMO -As espécies da família Cyperaceae incluem-se entre as principais plantas daninhas que infestam as lavouras de arroz irrigado no Rio Grande do Sul. Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar o controle de Cyperus esculentus, a seletividade e a produtividade de grãos de arroz, cultivar Qualimax 1, em função de épocas de início da irrigação por inundação, épocas de aplicação e doses do herbicida penoxsulam. O experimento foi instalado em campo, no ano agrícola 2005/06. Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso com parcelas subsubdivididas, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos constaram de duas épocas de aplicação (precoce e tardia) do penoxsulam, três épocas de início da irrigação (1, 15 e 30 dias após a aplicação dos tratamentos -DAT) e doses do herbicida (0, 24, 36, 48 e 60 g ha -1 ). Observou-se que o penoxsulam apresentou seletividade à cultura do arroz irrigado, independentemente da associação dos tratamentos testados. A aplicação do penoxsulam, associado à entrada de água até 15 dias após a aplicação dos tratamentos, mostrou eficiente controle de C. esculentus. A maior produtividade foi obtida pela aplicação do penoxsulam em doses iguais ou superiores a 36 g ha -1 , independentemente da época de aplicação e quando a irrigação foi realizada nas épocas iniciais.Palavras-chave: Oryza sativa, penoxsulam, irrigação da cultura, épocas de aplicação, cyperaceas.ABSTRACT -The Cyperaceae family include the most important weeds found in the state of Rio Grande do Sul rice fields. The objective of this work was to evaluate Cyperus esculentus control and rice cv. Qualimax 1 selectivity and grain yield in function of the irrigation starting times, application times and penoxsulam rates. The trial was set up under field conditions in the agricultural year of 2005/2006 and was arranged in a completely randomized block design with split plots and four replications. Treatments were in a factorial scheme (2 x 3 x 5) and consisted of two herbicide application times (early and late), three irrigation starting times (1, 15 and 30 days after treatment), and herbicide rates (0, 24, 36, 48 and 60 g ha -1 ). The herbicide penoxsulam showed selectivity to the rice culture regardless of the association between the evaluated treatments. The application of penoxsulam, combined with irrigation starting 15 days after herbicide application promoted efficient control of C. esculentus. Highest grain yield was obtained by applying penoxsulam at the rates of 36 g ha -1 or above, regardless of the application time, and when early irrigation was carried out.

Historical ethnobotany: an overview of selected studies

Historical Ethnobotany is an area of research responsible for understanding past interrelationships between people and plant using written records and iconography. The literature on this topic is scattered, and many of these studies are not recognised as such; therefore, it is difficult to compile historical ethnobotanical data. Accordingly, this study attempted to draw a general picture of the publications in this field. The Scopus, ISI Web of Knowledge and Scirus databases were used to search for articles with such keywords as “Ethnobotany + History” and “Historical Ethnobotany” among others. After the studies were selected, information was extracted that included the continents addressed and historical ages. Most studies encompassed a time frame that began in the Modern Age (54.7%), and 46% of the studies were focused on the American continent. With regard to the nature of the source, 98% of the studies included written records, and publications that used the documental analysis as a secondary data in their scope of research were among the most frequent types of studies that were found. In respect to iconographic sources, paintings were used in 6% of the studies. A total of 66% of the studies involved a species or species group as the study object. Our survey revealed the vast scope of these Historical Ethnobotany studies. We believe that this scientific field has great potential for future development and that its findings will only grow in importance considering the current ethnobotanical debate.
