A symmetry model for genetic coding via a wallpaper group composed of the traditional four bases and an imaginary base E: Towards category theory-like systematization of molecular/genetic biology

Abstract: BackgroundPreviously, we suggested prototypal models that describe some clinical states based on group postulates. Here, we demonstrate a group/category theory-like model for molecular/genetic biology as an alternative application of our previous model. Specifically, we focus on deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) base sequences.ResultsWe construct a wallpaper pattern based on a five-letter cruciform motif with letters C, A, T, G, and E. Whereas the first four letters represent the standard DNA bases, the fifth is int… Show more

“…The conversion between an explicit 0 and implicit 0 as in 0 5 ↔() is permitted under the condition that all changes are recognized. A similar idea was introduced in our previous report [ 19 ]. Practical details are given in sections 3, 4 and 5.…”

“…Furthermore, any or all criteria of DSM-5 can be brought into line in a unique vector belonging to a single set A = {A j | A j ∈ Z 2 ×∞ }. This approach is similar to a coding method that we previously reported for indels of deoxyribonucleic acid sequences [ 19 ]. Evidently, modulo-2 (or −7) multiplication and division can also be performed although their optimal applications are to be explored in future studies.…”

“…Regarding pattern type, it belongs to wallpaper group (or plane symmetry group or plane crystallographic group) [40]; such patterns occur frequently in architecture and decorative art, especially in textiles and tiles as well as wallpaper. The work of Andreas Speiser and his student Edith Muller was perhaps the first attempt by outsiders to describe the symmetries in repeated patterns [41].…”

“…Later on, Sawamura et al made an effort to systematize molecular and genetic biology using category theory. In their work, the authors constructed a wallpaper pattern to describe the algebraic features of DNA base sequences [72]. More recently, Remy Tuyeras built a much stronger connection between genetics and category theory through a series of papers.…”
