A System Dynamics Model to Facilitate the Development of Policy for Urban Heat Island Mitigation

Abstract: This article presents a customized system dynamics model to facilitate the informed development of policy for urban heat island mitigation within the context of future climate change, and with special emphasis on the reduction of heat-related mortality. The model incorporates a variety of components (incl.: the urban heat island effect; population dynamics; climate change impacts on temperature; and heat-related mortality) and is intended to provide urban planning and related professionals with: a facilitated … Show more

“…The positive interaction effect between conifers and albedo (Figure 3) further suggests that evapotranspiration may be a key cooling mechanism for conifers. Studies often assume that surface temperature is negatively associated with albedo, except over water [30]. However, our results suggest that conifers with a lower albedo were actually cooler.…”

“…Similarly, for bands 1 through 7, we multiplied each by 2.75 × 10 −5 and subtracted 0.2 to convert the calibrated reflectance bands into radiance units (measured in W/(m 2 sr um). We also estimated albedo because albedo is often a key driver of microclimate [30]. We calculated albedo using Equation (1), following Lee et al [31].…”

“…Other studies that explored the us of SD modelling in examining climate change risks focused on exsmining effects for different policies without the quantification of potential increased or decrased in heat-related risks. For example, Dare (Dare, 2021) developed a system dynamics modeelling approach to assist in the development of heat island mitigation policies qualitively without a deeper quantification of heat-related mortality reduction. The approach proposed in this paper outline a quantitive approach on how SD can be implemented to examine heat risks.…”
