A temporal-interactivist perspective on the dynamics of mental states

Abstract: This paper addresses the dynamics of mental states in relation to the dynamics of the interaction with the external world. It contributes a formalised temporal-interactivist approach to these dynamics based on temporal traces for semantics and on a temporal trace language to provide an expressive means to formulate dynamic properties. The approach provides both a foundation for the dynamical and interactivist perspective on cognitive phenomena.

“…This basic model is based on the experienced-based trust model described in [14], and applied in [23,24,26]. In an agent's received experience, experiences are taken to be of two forms: direct experiences, for example, by observation, and indirect experiences obtained from communication.…”

“…Representation properties express how an internal state relates to external states (or input and/or output states) in past (backward) or future times (forward); e.g., [8], [44], [15], [16], [39]. For example, when a sensory neuron has a high activation level when a stimulus occurred (or has been sensed) before, this is a backward representation relation for this neuron.…”

“…In the cognitive area, much literature can be found on the notion of representational content of a mental state property of a certain agent; see, for example, Kim (1996), Bickhard (1993), Jonker and Treur (2003). One of the approaches described within the Philosophy of Mind literature, is the relational specification approach to representational content for internal (mental) agent states; cf.…”

“…In Section 6.2, it is shown how temporal factorisation can be related to the temporalinteractivist approach to mental states (cf. Bickhard, 1993, 2000, and Jonker and Treur, 2003. In Section 6.3 it is discussed how temporal factorisation relates to the Dynamical Systems Theory approach to cognition.…”
