A Terrestrial Single Chamber Microbial Fuel Cell-based Biosensor for Biochemical Oxygen Demand of Synthetic Rice Washed Wastewater

Abstract: Microbial fuel cells represent an innovative technology which allow simultaneous waste treatment, electricity production, and environmental monitoring. This study provides a preliminary investigation of the use of terrestrial Single chamber Microbial Fuel Cells (SMFCs) as biosensors. Three cells were created using Andean soil, each one for monitoring a BOD concentration of synthetic washed rice wastewater (SRWW) of 10, 100, and 200 mg/L for SMFC1, SMFC2 and SMFC3, respectively. The results showed transient, ex… Show more

“…MFCs have been mainly studied for energy generation or power supply to sensors in remote locations, where battery replacement is not feasible [ 10 ]. In addition, these systems have been studied as an alternative for remediation [ 11 ], as biosensors of biological oxygen demand [ 12 , 13 ], chrome concentration [ 14 ], copper and cadmium concentration [ 15 ] and for corrosion monitoring [ 16 ].…”

“…The use of mediator screen-printed electrodes or MFCs has led to a reduction in the size of the sensors themselves and their cost. MFCs for BOD analysis have come from mediator to mediator-less devices [ 18 ], with the design changing from two-chamber to single-chamber [ 142 , 145 ]. These advances contributed to greater accuracy and reproducibility of BOD measurements to enable using these developments in the commercialization of laboratory models.…”

“…It is necessary to adapt the level of the energy collected from the MFC to the needs of the system. A transceiver module is required for transmission of data that can be collected from a low power sensor node or from the MFC itself [136]. Figure 3 shows a panoramic view of an environmental monitoring and depollution system based on MFCs.…”
