A tight angular-momentum plane for disc galaxies

Abstract: The relations between the specific angular momenta (j) and masses (M) of galaxies are often used as a benchmark in analytic models and hydrodynamical simulations as they are considered to be amongst the most fundamental scaling relations. Using accurate measurements of the stellar (j*), gas (jgas), and baryonic (jbar) specific angular momenta for a large sample of disc galaxies, we report the discovery of tight correlations between j, M, and the cold gas fraction of the interstellar medium (fgas). At fixed fga… Show more

“…This predicted scaling agrees quite well with the observational results of [163], especially for M s 10 10 M . Lower-mass galaxies tend to lie somewhat above this relation because they tend to have a lower surface brightness, which implies a larger size at fixed mass.…”

“…It is clear that the low-concentration halos have higher spin parameters on average than the median halos (see also Neto et al 2007;Macciò et al 2007). This may be relevant for creating the extended gas distribution of UDGs (Amorisco & Loeb 2016), although AGC 114905 and AGC 242019 seem to have a normal baryonic specific angular momentum (Mancera Piña et al 2021b). It would be interesting to take the late-forming IllustrisTNG halos we have identified and perform a detailed study on halo and baryonic angular momenta for the gas-rich UDGs.…”

“…For example, both observations and simulations suggest a deep connection between Mgas and the angular momentum and formation histories of the dark matter halos in which the galaxies reside (e.g. Boissier et al 2001, Guo et al 2017, Lutz et al 2018, Obuljen et al 2019, Mancera Piña et al 2021. This is active area of research that will benefit from the sensitivity of the next generation of observations, especially to push the study of the galaxy-halo connection to lower mass galaxies.…”
