A topology control approach for utilizing multiple channels in multi-radio wireless mesh networks

Abstract: We consider the channel assignment problem in a multi-radio wireless mesh network that involves assigning channels to radio interfaces for achieving efficient channel utilization. We present a graph-theoretic formulation of the channel assignment guided by a novel topology control perspective, and show that the resulting optimization problem is NP-complete. We also present an ILP formulation that is used for obtaining a lower bound for the optimum. We then develop a new greedy heuristic channel assignment algor… Show more

“…In this section, we evaluate the performance of our proposed TiMesh MC-WMN architecture and compare it with the Hyacinth [1] and CLICA [2] architectures using ns-2 simulations. We consider both UDP (User Datagram Protocol) and TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) traffic.…”

“…We point out that random locations of 50 nodes in a square kilometer induces a communication graph with a high degree and a diameter of 2 or 3 [MDS10]. In addition, the interference set of each link contains almost all the other links.…”

“…Some works propose a traffic-independent (TI) channel assignment, while others propose a trafficdriven (TD) channel assignment. In [7,10,11] the main objective is to minimize interference subject to obtaining a prescribed level of network connectivity. The schemes strive to assign channels to all radios of nodes in the network.…”
