A Two-Layer, Energy-Efficient Approach for Joint Power Control and Uplink–Downlink Channel Allocation in D2D Communication

Abstract: Energy efficiency (EE) is a critical performance indicator for the device-to-device (D2D) communication underlaying cellular networks due to limited battery capacity and serious interference between user equipment. In this study, we proposed a power control and channel allocation scheme for the EE maximization of the D2D pairs, while jointly reusing uplink–downlink resources and guaranteeing the cellular users’ (CUs) quality of service (QoS). The formulated problem was a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MI… Show more

“…(1) One-to-one D2D communication Resource allocation in one-to-one D2D communication was studied in [18,19]. In [18], a network-assisted distributed processing architecture was proposed to solve the throughput optimization problem, which included receiving mode selection, verification for relay selection, and transmission power adjustment.…”

“…A hybrid particle swarm optimization (HPSO) algorithm was proposed to maximize network capacity [15]. Through the Lambert W function, Zhou et al derived the transmitted power corresponding to the maximum energy efficiency and allocated channels based on the Kuhn-Munkres algorithm [16]. These methods divided the joint optimization problem into two subproblems which were solved singly or sequentially without sufficient consideration of the interaction feedback between them.…”

“…However, direct communication between devices using licensed cellular band is expected to be allowed in 5G systems which is called device-to-device (D2D) communication technology. D2D communication allows devices to communicate with each other without or limited involvement of a BS [ 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 ]. As D2D users can directly communicate among themselves using the same cellular infrastructure, it not only offloads traffic from the core network but also improves applications and services offered by the system.…”
