A unified description of surface waves and guided waves with relative amplitude dispersion maps

Abstract: SUMMARY Compared with surface waves, guided waves are rarely applied in near-surface investigation. The main reason may lie in the complexity of their dispersion curves. Besides, the study and understanding of guided wave dispersion characteristics are now also inadequate and not deep enough. In this paper, we derived the complete theoretical dispersion curves of P–SV-wave and pure P-wave systems in layered media based on the transmission matrix method and obtained the relative displacement ampl… Show more

“…The higher-mode leaking modes (Π modes) extracted from earthquake records were found to be most sensitive to the Vp structure (Li, Shi et al, 2021). In near-surface investigations, Sun et al (2021) linked the Π mode to guided waves (mode) (Robertsson et al, 1996;Roth et al, 1998), which is helpful for understanding the leaking mode in large-scale observations. The term "guided wave" refers to the dispersive waves before surface wave arrivals instead of the waveforms generated by multiple reflections within the low-velocity layer (LVL).…”

“…In the case of high Poisson ratios, the dispersion curves of guided-P modes are close to those of pure acoustic waves (Sun et al 2021). To study the oscillation features of the calculated modes, the P-and S-wave potentials of the modes at 0.03 Hz were calculated instead of the displacements because the PSV displacements consist of both P and S waves (Fig.…”
