A unique case of clear cell variant of calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor involving the maxilla

Abstract: Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT) is a rare, benign, odontogenic tumor arising from the odontogenic epithelium and accounts for approximately 1% of all odontogenic tumors. Clear cell variant of CEOT is a distinct entity and has more aggressive biological behavior and higher chances of recurrence. Here, we present a unique case of clear cell variant of CEOT involving the left side of the maxillary alveolus in a 73-year-old female patient with thorough clinical, radiological, and histological detail… Show more

“…[20][21][22]27,47 The lesion is extensive to the maxillary sinus and the nasal cavity and causes displacement of the eye globe, similar to the characteristics observed in our case. Chatterjee et al 22 illustrated an example of CCCEOT involving the left side of the middle third of the face in a 73-year-old female individual who refused to undergo any surgery due to her age. Munteanu et al 21 described a 45-year-old female individual with a diffuse swelling of the left maxilla that showed extension and involvement of the alveolar process, maxillary sinus, and palatine process.…”

“…3,4 This rare variant has been acknowledged as more aggressive when compared with the conventional CEOT. 4,[19][20][21][22] However, in a recent systematic review, 4 CCCEOT was reported to be associated with demographic data and behavior similar to CEOT, suggesting that the presence of clear cells has no substantial clinical significance and does not support the separation of this histological variant as a distinct category. According to Jain et al, 23 CCCEOT exhibits a biphasic histological pattern quite consistent with the areas of diagnosis of the lesion in question and other areas with conspicuous clear cell component.…”
