A Unique Case of Recurrent Metachronous Volvulus of the Gastrointestinal Tract

Abstract: Colonic volvulus is an uncommon disease that predisposes patients to bowel obstruction in both the adult and pediatric population. The international literature offers few reports of synchronous or metachronous volvulus of 2 organs of the gastrointestinal tract. We describe a unique case of a patient who presented with recurrent metachronous volvulus of the sigmoid colon, cecum, and stomach. The patient underwent multiple operations for bowel obstruction, lysis of adhesions, and colon resection. The interesting… Show more

“…12 Even after an exhaustive search for metachronicity of volvulus of the splenic flexure in the past literature, only a handful of case reports could be retrieved and mostly they have discussed of sigmoid and caecal volvulus. [15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22] None of the reports described of splenic flexure volvulus as a metachronous event to sigmoid volvulus. Volvulus of the splenic flexure is a rare condition to encounter in the clinical scenario, and that too being metachronous is even much rarer.…”

“…Any number of reports on synchronous or metachronous volvulus involving the sigmoid colon and cecum, [39,40] transverse colon, [41,42] small intestines, [43] or even stomach [44] were present in the literature. In such cases, mobile intestines generally arising from intestinal malrotation play an activate role in SV.…”
