A unique kinesin‐like protein, Klp8, is involved in mitosis and cell morphology through microtubule stabilization

Abstract: Kinesins are microtubule (MT)‐based motors involved in various cellular functions including intracellular transport of vesicles and organelles, and dynamics of chromosomes during cell division. The fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe expresses nine kinesin‐like proteins (klps). Klp8 is one of them and has not been characterized yet though it has been reported to localize at the division site. Here, we studied function and localization of Klp8 in S. pombe cells. The gene klp8+ was not essential for both via… Show more

“…The kinesin proteins are microtubules depolymerases, which are involved in mitosis, cell migration, trafficking, and cell signaling . KIF2A, as one member of the kinesin protein family, has attracted a lot of attention due to its implication in the development and progression of several tumors .…”

“…In the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae Meyen ex E.C. Hansen five [ 16 ], in the fission yeast Schizosaccaromyces pombe Lindner nine [ 17 , 18 ], in the filamentous ascomycetes Aspergillus nidulans (Eidam) Winter and Neurospora crassa Shear et Dodge [ 18 , 19 ], and in the basidiomycete smut U. maydis [ 20 ], nine to eleven kinesin motor proteins have been identified, respectively, but an extensive survey of the kinesins found in filamentous basidiomycetes (Agaricomycetes) is missing.…”

“…In the budding yeast, the five kinesin genes belong to four kinesin families [ 16 ]. S. pombe kinesin-8 and -14 families [ 17 ], and in A. nidulans kinesin-3 family, have each two members [ 19 ].…”
