A Universal Ts‐VI Triangle Method for the Continuous Retrieval of Evaporative Fraction From MODIS Products

Abstract: The triangle method based on the spatial relationship between remotely sensed land surface temperature (Ts) and vegetation index (VI) has been widely used for the estimates of evaporative fraction (EF). In the present study, a universal triangle method was proposed by transforming the Ts‐VI feature space from a regional scale to a pixel scale. The retrieval of EF is only related to the boundary conditions at pixel scale, regardless of the Ts‐VI configuration over the spatial domain. The boundary conditions of … Show more

“…If pixels from different surface conditions are plotted in a Ts-NDVI scatterplot, they form a triangle pattern. The evaporative fraction and the Priestley-Taylor coefficientthe ratio potential evaporation over equilibrium evaporationcan 65 be parameterised from that triangle, which are consequently used to calculate ET (Zhu et al, 2017;Jiang and Islam, 2001;Mallick et al, 2009). Fifth, NDVI is used, e.g.…”

“…The results obtained in the present work, especially for RF and RFRK, represent an important improvement with respect to the models based on the adiabatic lapse rate or on the hydrostatic equilibrium of the atmosphere and can be of great help for the improvement of the estimation of the real evapotranspiration, on a regional scale. Traditionally, the temperature at the time of the passage of the satellites, required by most methods, has been obtained using mechanical interpolation techniques, as the Inverse Distance Weighting [76] or models based on the hydrostatic equilibrium of the atmosphere from the values provided by the MODIS MOD07 product [77], which in addition to presenting a lower accuracy than that obtained for RFRK in this work, have the disadvantage of having a spatial resolution of 5 km.…”

“…Las estaciones operativas durante el año 2016 fueron E9, E11, E12, E13, E15, E32, E34, E35, E36, E39 y E40, distribuidas en zonas ganaderas de pasturas naturales, en áreas cultivadas con trigo, o en zonas de pasturas aún no explotadas (http://www.arm.gov). Las observaciones de ARM han sido utilizadas con propósito de validación en diferentes investigaciones (Venturini et al, 2008;Girolimetto y Venturini et al, 2013;Zhu et al, 2017).…”
