A Usage-Based Model of Early Grammatical Development

Abstract: The representations and processes yielding the limited length and telegraphic style of language production early on in acquisition have received little attention in acquisitional modeling. In this paper, we present a model, starting with minimal linguistic representations, that incrementally builds up an inventory of increasingly long and abstract grammatical representations (form+meaning pairings), in line with the usage-based conception of language acquisition. We explore its performance on a comprehension a… Show more

“…Se estima, de hecho, que el uso de energía de Ethereum pronto disminuirá en ~99.95% (Beekhuizen, 2021), lo cual supondrá también una ventaja respecto de otras monedas, industrias y aplicaciones tecnológicas cuyo consumo anual de energía es considerablemente mayor (Ver gráfico).…”

“…This paper simulates the acquisition of constructions by incrementally increasing the amount of exposure: 100k words, 200k words, 300k words and so on up to 2 million words (Alishahi and Stevenson, 2008;Matusevych et al, 2013;Beekhuizen et al, 2015). This provides a series of grammars, each representing a different state in the learning process.…”
