A User-Centered Approach to User-Building Interactions

Abstract: Providing a task-representative user interface for building operations and control puts the user in charge of their health, safety, and well-being and improves task performance. Enabling users control of building conditions and operations often results in poor overall building performance, such as increased energy usage due to lighting a non-occupied room. As a result, building designers limit the control users have in the spaces they occupy by implementing lighting schedules, for example. However, research ha… Show more

“…However, as argued by [58], the theory of environmental determinism does not recognize social aspects as an explanatory factor for user satisfaction [50]. Another stream of research uses the theory of constructivism [58] in buildings where society is defining the space and influencing people's behavior [51]. Constructivism is based on cultural and social standards as well as learned behaviors.…”

“…Constructivism is based on cultural and social standards as well as learned behaviors. However, the weakness of this stream of the theory is that the measures are difficult to quantify, with little support for construction designers, and the theory does not take into account the environmental impact on human behavior [50,58].…”

“…In this way, disorientation or annoyance is avoided and people feel more in control. Reference [19] has indicated an improved user experience results when users regulate their environment. In addition, the concept of interactive learning allows to evaluate the quality of the database.…”

“…We have identified three ways in which this can occur. First is the potential to provide a finer grained control interface for occupants to enhance individual comfort, which has been shown to improve worker productivity [5]. To achieve this, we argue that the individual building occupant must be part of the control loop, with the capacity to create the micro climate that suits particular tasks and personal preferences.…”
