The underwater environment is filled with various sounds, with its soundscape composed of biological, geographical, and anthropological sounds. Our work focused on developing a novel method to observe and classify these sounds, enriching our understanding of the underwater ecosystem. We constructed a biologging system allowing near-real-time observation of underwater soundscapes. Utilizing deep-learning-based edge processing, this system classifies the sources of sounds, and upon the tagged animal surfacing, it transmits positional data, results of sound source classification, and sensor readings such as depth and temperature. To test the system, we attached the logger to sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) and collected data through a cellular network. The data provided information on the location-specific sounds detected by the sea turtles, suggesting the possibility to infer the distribution of specific species of organisms over time. The data showed that not only biological sounds but also geographical and anthropological sounds can be classified, highlighting the potential for conducting multi-point and long-term observations to monitor the distribution patterns of various sound sources. This system, which can be considered an autonomous mobile platform for oceanographic observations, including soundscapes, has significant potential to enhance our understanding of acoustic diversity.

Background Individual variation in movement strategies of foraging loggerhead turtles have been documented on the scale of tens to hundreds of kilometers within single ocean basins. Use of different strategies among individuals may reflect variations in resources, predation pressure or competition. It is less common for individual turtles to use different foraging strategies on the scale of kilometers within a single coastal bay. We used GPS tags capable of back-filling fine-scale locations to document movement patterns of loggerhead turtles in a coastal bay in Northwest Florida, U.S.A. Methods Iridium-linked GPS tags were deployed on loggerhead turtles at a neritic foraging site in Northwest Florida. After filtering telemetry data, point locations were transformed to movement lines and then merged with the original point file to define travel paths and assess travel speed. Home ranges were determined using kernel density function. Diurnal behavioral shifts were examined by examining turtle movements compared to solar time. Results Of the 11 turtles tagged, three tracked turtles remained in deep (~ 6 m) water for almost the entire tracking period, while all other turtles undertook movements from deep water locations, located along edges and channels, to shallow (~ 1–2 m) shoals at regular intervals and primarily at night. Three individuals made short-term movements into the Gulf of Mexico when water temperatures dropped, and movement speeds in the Gulf were greater than those in the bay. Turtles exhibited a novel behavior we termed drifting. Conclusions This study highlighted the value provided to fine-scale movement studies for species such as sea turtles that surface infrequently by the ability of these GPS tags to store and re-upload data. Future use of these tags at other loggerhead foraging sites, and concurrent with diving and foraging data, would provide a powerful tool to better understand fine-scale movement patterns of sea turtles.

Life-history polymorphism in habitat use has been widely reported in aquatic migratory animals. Adult loggerhead sea turtles Caretta caretta in the North Pacific exhibit foraging-habitat polymorphism, showing a 2.4-fold greater reproductive output for neritic foragers than for oceanic ones. However, knowledge of how turtles in each habitat behave and what effect this has on reproduction remains limited. We combined horizontal movement and dive behavior analyses to explore foraging behavior and habitat utilization in adult female loggerheads in the North Pacific. Between 2016 and 2018, satellite relay data loggers were attached to 10 females nesting in Japan. The turtles were tracked for 219.2 ± 185.0 d (±SD) within the range of 10 to 521 d. Three foraging destinations were revealed, with different foraging tactics in each habitat: (1) the neritic East China Sea (ECS), (2) neritic coastal areas of mainland Japan (CMJ), and (3) oceanic North Pacific Ocean (NPO). ECS females mainly foraged on benthic prey with foraging-site fidelity; however, some turtles alternately preyed on benthos and plankton along with their seasonal migration. CMJ females also foraged on benthic prey with site fidelity, whereas NPO females foraged on plankton by drifting eastward with the oceanic currents. Dive-type analyses revealed that the proportion of time spent presumably foraging was similar among the 3 habitats, suggesting that the nutrient richness of prey items and the migration distance between foraging and breeding grounds may cause differences in reproductive outputs among different life-history types of loggerhead turtles.
