A Validation Study of the Korean Version of Therapeutic Presence Inventory-Therapist(TPI-T)

Abstract

Objectives The purpose of this study is to validate whether the Therapeutic Presence Inventory-therapist developed by Geller et al. (2010) is suitable for the situation of Korean counselors.
 Methods For this purpose, a total of 21 items were composed by collecting opinions such as translation-reverse translation and expert review after receiving approval for validation of Korean scale from the author of the original scale. For this, an exploratory factor analysis, discriminant validity, reliability, confirmatory factor analysis, and criterion validity analysis were performed by conducting a therapeutic presence inventory-therapist for 456 persons with a master s degree or higher in counseling major and having more than one year of counseling experience.
 Results As a result of the exploratory factor analysis, a total of 20 items were confirmed as the final items of this scale, and 3 sub-factors were identified. The first factor was named process, the second factor as experience, and the third factor as immersion. As a result of confirmatory factor analysis, good fit index was shown, and validity was evaluated through correlation analysis with empathy, real relationship, and work alliance inventory.
 Conclusions Implications derived from the results of this study and suggestions for future research were presented. This will be helpful in future counselor education and counseling practice, and furthermore, it will become a basic data for counselor research.
