A walk on the wild side: Oryza species as source for rice abiotic stress tolerance

Abstract: Oryza sativa, the common cultivated rice, is one of the most important crops for human consumption, but production is increasingly threatened by abiotic stresses. Although many efforts have resulted in breeding rice cultivars that are relatively tolerant to their local environments, climate changes and population increase are expected to soon call for new, fast generation of stress tolerant rice germplasm, and current within-species rice diversity might not be enough to overcome such needs. The Oryza genus con… Show more

“…1a,d,e). Many of the wild rice species, including O. australiensis , have been marked for their potential usage towards tolerance to heat and drought (Tian et al ., 2011; Sanchez et al ., 2013; Singh et al ., 2015; Menguer et al ., 2017). The differences in g s and E are likely related to differences in the stomatal features or regulation of stomatal opening across the genotypes, as stomatal features are critical for photosynthesis, gas exchange, and water use efficiency (Farquhar & Sharkey, 1982).…”

“…The search for genetic variability in the Oryza genus is a shortcut to obtain resistant/tolerant rice genotypes and to develop cultivars that adapt to natural adversities (Menguer et al 2017;Szareski et al 2018). Several authors report wild rice plants that are resistant/tolerant to biotic and abiotic factors (Brar and Khush, 2003).…”

“…The Oryza genus is composed of 24 species, two cultivated (O. sativa and O. glaberrima) and other 22 wild species. These wild species represent between 15 and 25 million years of evolutionary diversification (Vaughan, 1994;Menguer et al 2017).…”

“…Tateoka is a wild halophytic rice that grows in coastal and tidal regions of Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Myanmar (Menguer et al 2017). In Bangladesh, this spontaneously grows from south eastern part, Teknaf to the south western part, Satkhira.…”
