Abamectin Efficacy on the Potato Cyst Nematode Globodera pallida

Abstract: The potato cyst nematode Globodera pallida is a major pest of the potato crop. Abamectin is a biological pesticide showing high nematicide activity, but its efficacy to control G. pallida has not been investigated to date. In this study, combination of different abamectin concentrations ranging from 1.125 to 36 µg/mL x exposure times from 24 to 384 h were tested on the nematode in a hatching test. Abamectin induced mortality with LD50 value in the range of 13.23 (after 24 h) to 2.90 µg/mL (after 384 h). A glas… Show more

“…Individual application of BioNematon (commercial product of egg parasitic fungi Purpureocillium lilacinum) and Gold (commercial product of the soil bacterium Streptomyces avermitilis surpassed Moringa plant extracts and showed the best augmentation in plant length, total plant fresh weight and shoot dry weight (Table1) and significantly suppressed nematode population, number of females, galls and egg masses compared to untreated plants (Table 2). These results support the findings of Oclarit and Cumagun ,2009;Metwally et al, 2019;Sasanelli et al, 2019). BioNematon suppressed nematode population through colonization on roots as well as on egg mass and female body, thereby destroying females, and eggs of Meloidogyne spp.…”

“…Bacteria and fungi are the most important biocontrol agents that have been studied. For instance, Abamectin a natural fermentation product of the bacterium Streptomyces avermitilis was reported to have nematicidal activity against different genera of plant nematodes (Youssef and Lashein, 2015;Sasanelli et al, 2019). The common soil fungus, Purpureocillium lilacinum (Formerly Paecilomyces lilacinus) is well known as a facultative egg pathogen of sedentary nematodes.…”

“…124,125 The application of abamectin to the soil at 18 and 36 μg mL −1 resulted in around 89% reduction in the multiplication rate of G. pallida in comparison to the untreated control and fosthiazate treatment under potted trials. 125 In the future, studies should focus on exploration of superior soil microbiome against PCN.…”

“…It was also evident that abamectin caused egg hatch inhibition of G. pallida with the median lethal dose (LD 50 ) of 2.9 and 13.23 μg mL −1 after 24 and 348 h, respectively 124,125 . The application of abamectin to the soil at 18 and 36 μg mL −1 resulted in around 89% reduction in the multiplication rate of G. pallida in comparison to the untreated control and fosthiazate treatment under potted trials 125 . “…The usage of nematicides has become a conventional tactic for controlling SCN globally (Gaspar et al, 2014). For example, abamectin, a highly efficient and economical nematicide, has been extensively employed to manage cyst nematodes (CNs) including SCN in certain seed treatment products and irrigation systems (Cabrera et al, 2009;Zhang et al, 2017;Clifton et al, 2018;Jensen et al, 2018a;Sasanelli et al, 2019). Therefore, it is crucial to adopt an integrated approach combining cultural practices, resistant cultivars, and nematicides to develop the most effective management strategy that reduces the losses caused by SCN in soybean fields.…”
