“…The results of this study showed that a volume of peritoneal fluid useful for gross, clinicopathological and cytological evaluation can be obtained in cases with negative ultrasonography examination (21/30 horses, ie, 70 per cent). However, when peritoneal fluid is not detected, abdominal ultrasonography can be used to identify the presence of the large colon, spleen and/or distended small intestine loops in the ventral part of the abdomen in order to avoid them during the abdominocentesis procedure (Freeman 2003, Walton and Southwood 2013), and was used in 11 cases in this study. In our study, the indirect ultrasound‐guided technique was used in 12/109 horses, all these patients but one were admitted as emergency with clinical signs of abdominal pain.…”

“…1 Abdominocentesis provides valuable diagnostic information to monitor patients being managed medically as well as to determine need for surgical management. [2][3][4] Morbidity associated with abdominocentesis is low. Complications include perforation or laceration of the gastrointestinal tract or spleen, septic peritonitis, and abdominal wall cellulitis or abscessation.…”
