ABO blood types and postpartum depression among Chinese women: A prospective cohort study in Tianjin, China

Abstract: Postpartum depression is associated with adverse consequences for mother and offspring. The heritable ABO blood group has been associated with multiple diseases, including mental illness and diabetes. We explored the association of ABO blood group and postpartum depressive symptoms (PPDS) in a population-based cohort of pregnant Chinese women. From 2010 to August 2012, we recruited 8842 pregnant women with a mean age of 28.5 years (SD: 2.94) and mean body mass index of 22.4kg/m (SD: 3.45) in Tianjin, China. We… Show more

“…In the study of 108 normal volunteers, the results indicated the correlation between O blood type and depression [39]. A current trial of 8842 pregnant women reported that, in comparison to those with blood type B, patients with blood type O, A, or AB had a higher odds ratio of postpartum depression [36]. Additionally, past surveys established that mental anxiety with cardiovascular risk has also associated with ABO blood type [40].…”

“…Another study in China demonstrated that blood group B was associated with reduced odds of postpartum depressive symptoms (PPDS) in pregnant Chinese women. So non-blood group B may be a useful risk factor for PPDS in Chinese pregnant women [31] . Hence, scientists have found some clues that ABO may play an essential role in affective disorders.…”

“…However, the blood type O may be a prognostic factor for patients with gastric cancer. The ABO blood group is also linked to the prognosis of various diseases [8,9,10,11], and prospective studies showed that the ABO blood group is associated with other diseases, which may be clinically signi cant [12,13,14]. Hence, we hypothesized that the ABO blood group would be associated with the risk of COVID -19 infection.…”
