Applications of drones in emergency response, like firefighting, have been promoted in the past decade. As the autonomy of drones continues to improve, the ways in which they are integrated into firefighting teams and their impact on crews are changing. This demands more understanding of how firefighters perceive and interact with autonomous drones. This paper presents a drone-based system for emergency operations with which firefighters can interact through sound, lights, and a graphical user interface. We use interviews with stakeholders collected in two field trials to explore their perceptions of the interaction and collaboration with drones. Our result shows that firefighters perceived visual interaction as adequate. However, for audio instructions and interfaces, information overload emerges as an essential problem. The potential impact of drones on current work configurations may involve shifting the position of humans closer to supervisory decision-makers and changing the training structure and content.

Assigning lifelike qualities to robotic agents (Anthropomorphism) is associated with complex affective interpretations of their behavior. These anthropomorphized perceptions are traditionally elicited through robots' designs. Yet, aerial robots (or drones) present a special case due to their -traditionally -non-anthropomorphic design, and prior research shows conflicting evidence on their perception as either person-like, animal-like, or machine-like. In this work, we explore how people perceive drones in a cross-dimensional space between these three dimensions by varying the affective state presented on the drone. To capture these perceptions, we developed a novel measurement instrument AnZoMa. We describe the design, use, and deployment of the instrument in an online study (N =98). The study results suggest that different drone emotions triggered people to attribute various characteristics to the drone (e.g., interaction metaphors, traits, and features) and variations in acceptability of drone affective states. These results demonstrate the interdependencies between affective perceptions and anthropomorphism of drones. We conclude by discussing the necessity to integrate cross-dimensional perception of anthropomorphism in human-drone interaction and affective computing. This work contributes a novel tool to measure the dimensions and gravity of anthropomorphism and insights into interdependencies between different affective states displayed on drones and their anthropomorphized perception.

As we think about how to rebuild communities that have suffered destruction, it is imperative to discuss the recovery of architecture and culture. As the world of architectural education trends towards teaching the design of buildings that create "placelessness", we must teach students to look deeply at history, to synthesize its lessons, and apply them sensitively and appropriately. Aleppo in Syria has a rich heritage of Islamic architecture that spans millennia. While the destruction of Aleppo has left a scar in the hearts of its people, it is possible to rebuild using the lessons and forms of traditional architecture. At the University of Notre Dame, our current studio of fourth year students is studying and proposing how a neighborhood in the historic city center might begin to be rebuilt. This studio is a teaching tool that allows students to engage with a culture that is foreign to them; to see and apply universal principles adapted for climate, culture, and building technologies that have been honed locally over thousands of years. The core of the studio is analysis of traditional Syrian architecture, looking at how the architecture supports the community and engages with the unique climate. The students study how traditional building technologies, like dome and vault construction, support the functions housed within these forms. They delve into the distinguished history of craft as they study architectural ornament. All these lessons are ultimately applied to a building project, which they program, conceptually develop, and design at the scales of the urban, building, and detail. These students, while they may be practicing far away from Aleppo, are preserving the heritage of a place that has seen so much destruction. Their work is a testament to the power of design in recovering the memory of a city.
