Abrasive Water Jet Machining (AWJM) is an advanced machining process that has a variety of applications, including machining of hard-to-machine materials, drilling, milling, coating removal, polishing, etc. They are attractive because of their versatility, absence of heat-affected zones, low thermal-distortions, low cutting-forces, and environment-friendly nature. However, use of plain-water in AWJM poses some problems due to lack of jet coherence, poor suspension characteristics, and unsatisfactory performances in submerged-cutting and cutting of hollow surfaces. Countering these problems appropriately can lead to better cutting performances in terms of material removal rate, depth of cut, kerf-width, and kerf-taper. It can be achieved with addition of some additives in abrasive water-jet. These additives are mostly polymers of high molecular mass, which increases viscosity, suspension capability, and stability of jet, while reducing drag. In addition to AWJM, the effect of polymeric-additives in other water-based jets like Abrasive-Slurry-Jet (ASJ), High-pressure ASJ, etc. are also discussed. Therefore, this study aims to identify and list of different additives that are used in AWJM and other water-jet-based machining-processes over a past few decades, and to provide a run-through on their performances. It can provide the significant information to researchers working in fields related to waterjets.

Despite extensive knowledge of the cutting methods described, no universal method has been developed so far for evaluating the technological quality of elements shaped by different cutting processes. The aim of the research described in this article was to fill this gap and to propose the author’s methodology for the assessment of the technological quality of the surface of X5CRNI18-10 steel shaped as a result of laser cutting and abrasive water jet cutting. A synthetic index of technological quality assessment of the surface after cutting CTQ (cutting technological quality) was proposed. Three groups of factors were taken into account in the assessment of technological quality of the surface after cutting: selected surface texture parameters (arithmetic mean deviation of the surface Sa and total height of the surface St), results of measurements of dimensional accuracy of cut elements (length deviation LD and width deviation WD) as well as indicators of surface morphology estimated on the basis of microscopic images of the surface after cutting (deformation intensity DI and identification of cutting zones ICZ). On the basis of CTQ values determined, the cutting results of both cutting methods were compared. The analyses presented in this paper proved that the CTQ index can be effectively used to compare the results of a cutting process conducted using different methods and under different conditions. The developed CTQ index is a universal valuation tool, allowing for quantitative evaluation of features related to the technological quality of cutting process results.

Surface texturing is a technique that allows for the shaping of surface topography to meet various mechanical and tribological requirements. Abrasive-water jet (AWJ) technology is a promising approach to surface texturing, offering minimal heat impact, flexibility, and compatibility with complex surface geometries. High-pressure abrasive-water jet (AWJ) technology, as an innovative and versatile approach, significantly expands the possibilities of surface texturing for materials. Its advantages, such as precision, minimal thermal impact, sustainability, and a wide range of industrial applications, make it an attractive solution across various sectors. With continuous development and integration with modern digital technologies, AWJ is becoming an increasingly practical and cutting-edge tool in surface processing. The abrasive-water jet texturing process also affects surface geometry during the mating of components, which may be significant in reducing wear. The aim of the research was to determine the feasibility of obtaining specific structures on the surface of 304/1.4301 steel using abrasive-water jet technology. Results show that the highest load-bearing ratio of Smrk1 peaks, approximately 25%, was achieved at a texturing speed of 0.803 m/min. Conversely, the lowest load-bearing ratio of Smrk1 peaks, below 10%, was achieved at a texturing speed of 1.948 m/min. Grinding the surface after texturing increases its load-bearing capacity, leading to a twofold increase in the ability to maintain an oil layer. The obtained results may find application in various fields where controlling surface geometry is essential for improving material functionality and efficiency.
