Abscess Caused by Citrobacter koseri Infection: Three Case Reports and a Literature Review

Abstract: In this report, we present 3 cases of abscess caused by Citrobacter koseri. All infected patients recovered after initial empirical antibiotic treatment and percutaneous drainage of the abscess. We reviewed the literature and found 9 adult cases of C. koseri abscess. Most of these patients recovered after timely antibiotic treatment and drainage.

“…CT-guided percutaneous drainage and appropriate antibiotic therapy might be very effective for such patients. Infection with C. koseri is usually lethal despite surgical drainage, but mortality in such cases was attributed to acute pulmonary events arising during sepsis (Cai et al, 2007;Lin et al, 2011). Pulmonary findings were absent in our patient, and thus, she was perhaps more likely to be able to recover.…”

“…Intraspinal air can not only be isolated in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbosacral regions, but it can also spread throughout the entire spinal canal (Oertel et al, 2006). The Enterobacteriaceae species Citrobacter is an environmental organism, and patients with multiple comorbidities typically become infected in hospital settings, whereas disease seldom arises in the general population, especially among adults (Lin et al, 2011). Here, we describe an adult patient with pneumorachis possibly due to disseminated infection by enteric C. koseri.…”

“…Complicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) are frequently caused by Escherichia coli and Klebsiella species [1-3, 6-9]. However, very few renal abscess or EPN cases have implicated Citrobacter species as the causative agent [10]. Only 3 cases of renal abscess or EPN caused by Citrobacter species have been reported in the past 40 years [10-12].…”

Only 3 cases of renal abscess or EPN caused by Citrobacter species have been reported in the past 40 years [10-12]. Citrobacter species, members of the aerobic Enterobacteriaceae family, are gram negative bacilli that are commonly found in the intestinal tract [13].…”
