Abstract 2893: Curcumin loaded magnetic nanoparticles for breast cancer therapeutics and imaging applications

Abstract: Background: Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) with theranostic features (diagnosis and treatment) have attracted significant attention and will greatly improve the scope of nanomedicine in cancer applications. The aim of this study is to develop a novel MNPs formulation composed of an iron oxide core coated with α-cyclodextrin and pluronic polymer (F68), to load an anti-cancer drug (curcumin, CUR) and prevent particle aggregation, respectively. The therapeutic efficacy and imaging capabilities of this novel formul… Show more

“…The band around 1648 cm -1 associated with C-O stretching of carboxylate anion on the surface of cAuNps (Manju and Sreenivasan, 2012). Similarly, the bands 1508 cm -1 , 1029 cm -1 and 960 cm -1 that appear in cAuNps are due to vibrations of aliphatic C-H stretches and mixed vibrations of CH 3 , aromatic CCC and CCH determining the action of curcumin as a capping agent (Yallapu et al, 2012). A broad band in the first spectra at about 3510 cm -1 is assigned to the O-H stretching frequency which proves that curcumin particles successfully bind to AuNps (Sindhu et al, 2014).…”

“…18 Also, our study showed that FA-MNPs showed a dose-dependent preferential iron uptake in BEL-7402 cells; correspondingly, FA-MNPs elicited selective apoptosis in BEL-7402 cells in a seemingly concentration-dependent manner. However, 2.0 mg/mL NPs could not bring higher apoptosis or iron uptake compared to 1.0 mg/mL FA-MNPs, suggesting that there may exist a saturated status for cellular particle uptake in either BEL-7402 cells or HL7702 cells.…”

“…The magnetic field significantly increased the uptake and targeting of the cancer cells. 106 A similar study 110 was done with oncocalyxone A, an extract from the Brazilian plant Auxemma oncocalyx with antitumor activity. Iron oxide nanoparticles coated in oleic acid and oncocalyxone A were incorporated into the hydrophobic cores of block copolymer micelles.…”
