Abstract:During fibrinolysis the enzyme plasmin digests fibrin fibers, the primary structural elements in blood clots. Developing a mechanistic understanding of fibrinolysis is important for understanding the pathophysiology of hemostasis, but lysis mechanisms have long been debated. Using time-resolved fluorescence microscopy, we investigated the plasmin-mediated digestion of individual fibrin fibers. We found that digestion occurs all along the fiber length, but digestion rates vary spatially. At some fiber locations… Show more
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
