Abstract:Tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) are a family of endogenous proteins that were initially defined by their ability to inhibit the enzymatic activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), the major mediators of ECM breakdown and turnover. TIMPs are important regulators of ECM structure, function and homeostasis. Since their original discovery, additional MMP-independent functions have been attributed to TIMP family members leading to their designation as multifunctional proteins with discrete funct… Show more
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
