Abstract:Elephants naturally have low rates of cancer, potentially due to evolved genetic changes in tumor suppressor elephant TP53 (EP53) and amplification of 19 TP53 retrogenes. A better understanding of the mechanisms of cancer suppression in elephants by EP53 and its retrogenes could lead to more effective human cancer therapeutics.
